The course will offer an overview of the Old Testament’s collection of Wisdom Literature in the books of JobProverbsand Ecclesiastes, and its central collection of poetry in the book of Psalms.  Literary forms and rhetorical devices characteristic of Hebrew poetry and Wisdom Literature will be introduced as well as some of its distinctive theological themes and characteristics through a survey of the contents and messages of each of the four books.

The course will take up several of the critical philosophical questions presented in this literature: Where is God when we suffer? What is the meaning of life?  And What is the good life and how do I live it?

The training will be conducted in English, with translation into Estonian and Russian.

GOALS OF THE COURSE:

  • to distinguish the categories of Wisdom Literature from the other categories of OT literature (e.g., Law, Historical Narrative, Prophets, Psalms).
  • to explore various theological themes and the distinctive perspectives that shape and inform them within Wisdom Literatures and Psalms.
  • to introduce and analyse the various literary devices and their purposes as they are implemented in Wisdom Literature and Psalms.
  • to present a general overview of the contents and structure of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Psalms.
  • to offer opportunities to consider the contemporary relevance and application of these four books to our current experiences and ministry settings.

OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE:
By the end of the course students should . . .  

  • Know how to select and utilize appropriate hermeneutical methodologies to analyze and interpret Wisdom Literature and Biblical poetry.
  • Be able to recall and discuss major academic issues involved in the study of the Wisdom Literature and Psalms, such as questions of authorship, distinctive literary form, and the structure and compliation of the books.
  • Identify the major theological themes found within the three wisdom books and Psalms and analyze and contextualize their relevance and application for their life and ministry contexts.
  • Have formulated a general overview of the structure and content of each book.
  • Begin composing their own psalms, laments, and answers to the philosophical questions represented in this literature.
