Dr. Oswalt is regarded as one of the leading scholars on the book of Isaiah. For the compendium New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT), he has written a two-volume commentary on the book of Isaiah, Isaiah 1-39 and Isaiah 40-66, for a total of 1,532 pages of scholarly research. His practical, pastoral approach is expressed in the NIV Application Commentary on Isaiah, which adds a further 736 pages.
John N. Oswalt's books and research have been cited nearly 2,000 times, indicating his considerable scholarly influence (source: Google Scholar).

SUBJECT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course the student will:
- be able to explain how the prophets' messages deal with God's justice and love and to analyse their theological depth.
- be able to analyse how historical and cultural conditions have influenced the prophets' proclamations and relate them to the political and social issues of their time.
- be able to identify and discuss how different prophets address the same issues from different perspectives, creating a holistic picture of God's plan.
- be able to analyse how the messages of the prophets express ideas of redemption and hope and discuss their relevance in today's context.
- be able to identify and analyse the literary techniques used by the prophets, including metaphors and symbols, and discuss their impact on the message.
COURSE CONTENT
The Theological Depth of the Prophets: the prophets address complex theological issues such as God's justice and love. The prophets' messages explore dialogues that help us to understand the character of God and his relationship with humanity.
Contextual Relevance: Contextual analysis of the prophets' messages, how historical and cultural conditions influence the prophets' proclamations. The relationship of the prophets' messages to the political and social issues of their time.
Coherence and Diversity: While the books of the prophets may appear diverse, there is a unity in their messages. It looks at how different prophets address the same issues from different angles, creating a holistic picture of God's plan.
Redemption and Hope: The messages of the prophets contain a strong emphasis on redemption and hope, not only for their time but also for the future. The prophets' messages are timeless and resonate with people today.
Literary Techniques: Literary techniques used by the prophets will be analysed, including metaphors and symbols to convey complex ideas and emotions. These techniques enrich the prophets' message and bring it alive.
