To provide the student with an overview of the content of the Old Testament, to introduce the student to the theological, literary and historical issues that arise in the context of the text.

Upon completion of the course the student will:  

• comprehend the storyline of the Old Testament and the role played by the various parts of the Hebrew canon; 
• be able to demonstrate how the Old Testament narrative develops the salvation story of the Christian faith; 
• be able to explain how the person of God is seen in the Old Testament text; 
• be able to describe the historical, cultural and geographical setting of the Old Testament narrative; 
• be able to illustrate the development of the figure of the Messiah and the outworking of the covenant in the story of Old Testament Israel; 
• develop skills in independent analysis and research of Biblical topics; 
• have experienced accountability and working together in the process of developing one’s understanding of the biblical text. 

• • The divisions of the Old Testament and the development of the Canon. 
  • The creation story as a revelation of God’s character. 
  • God’s Covenant with Abraham, its subsequent expansion with Moses and its outplay in the history of Israel. 
  • The Mosaic law as a revelation of God’s character. 
  • The Documentary Hypothesis. 
  • The development of the figure of the Messiah. 
  • Wisdom Literature as reflections of life under God’s covenant.
